Thomas Haslinger
Chef Turned Bladesmith
By Manuel Silveira

Ever since Thomas Haslinger was a young boy growing up in Trostberg, Germany he has had a keen interest in knives. This interest led to his first hand made knives, as a teenager he made a double edged sword and a reproduction of a Buck folding hunter out of mild steel.

Thomas then became a chef and worked with knives everyday. He learned what made a good knife and what made a bad knife. Having to use knives of all kinds he gained a further appreciation for them and a greater understanding of what made a good knife.

Around 1992 he saw another knife makers' custom knives and thought "If that fellow can make knives like that, then I myself would and could do better". Then in 1994 he started making knives part time and in 1997 he joined the Canadian Knife makers Guild and is currently the Advertising Director. He is also a member of the Montana Knifemakers Association and attends several shows a year. Finally in 2000 Thomas started making knives full time.

Thomas prefers an individual style of knife, he enjoys creating one of a kind, unique knives that will appeal to knife users, art lovers, collectors, or anyone else who appreciates a fine blade. Thomas says, "I believe that all of my work should be a one of a kind creation. The joy of creating a unique knife (which will last a lifetime), is represented in the beauty, design, craftsmanship and function of each blade. I love to learn, to experiment and to test the blades that I create. I consistently am testing my blades and materials for performance, functions, durability and edge holding capabilities".
